Sports Medicine Degree


Sports medicine has many important and rewarding career choices. Athletic Trainers, Personal Trainers, Physical Therapists, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Sports Medicine Physicians, Dieticians and Nutritionists and Exercise Physiologists who work within the sports field hold a sports medicine degree. This study applies medical and scientific standards to exercise and sports and how the body performs. It is the study of physiology and biomechanics.

To excel in a sports medicine program one must be interested in science and medicine as well as in sports. And most importantly will need to be dedicated in serving the needs of others. Having a strong foundation in the sciences will help immensely in achieving this degree.

To achieve a degree in sports medicine a student will need to study advanced biology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology among other sciences and math. Degree programs help students develop the necessary skills to succeed and offer many different concentrations. Programs are offered on-campus and online. Nearly every university now offers some type of sports medicine program.

Online programs give working students the flexibility to work and complete their studies at the same time. Students can virtually attend web seminars, interactive training and tutorials. Certain programs will require clinical training and a short residency.

The most common degree is a Master of Science in Sports Science, which requires two years of graduate studies. But before entering this program one must have a 4-year undergraduate degree in sports medicine. Some colleges also offer other sports medicine degrees in the associate's and bachelor's levels. The student must finish a medical degree and residency to become a licensed medical practitioner.

It is very important in sports medicine to obtain a certification for the chosen field. Some of these certifications are the Board of Certification (BOC), certification for athletic trainers, and the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer certification (cPT).
